About Thor Kunkel

 

 

Thor Kunkel *1963 is currently writing at the top in the field of contemporary german writers.  He has a critically acclaimed track record as an award-winning writer of innovative and impactful novels, crossing a wide range of genres. Kunkel exploded onto the scene in 2004 with his scandalized, but bestselling-novel Endstufe.  The novel earned him the reputation of “being one of Germany’s hottest young novelists.” (THE GUARDIAN, 12. 2. 2004)

 

Born in Frankfurt/Main, Mr. Kunkel has known himself through the identity of “artist”for as long as he can remember - art in all forms comes as naturally to him as does breathing. Kunkel attended the Städel-Academy of Fine Arts and temporarily the San Francisco Art Institute, where he developed a taste for magic realism and post-conceptual art.

 

Though early in his life, he moved to London and after 5 years, he fell in love with the City of Amsterdam, where he spent almost his entire professional life as creative director and film-maker producing commercial work for McCann-Erickson and the Young & Rubicam Group, two of the world’s biggest agencies.

 

His first published novel The Blacklight-Terrarium (2000) did not only win him a prestigious literature-price but broke new ground for aspiring writers. The german public regards him as cult-figure, who hasn’t sold out to mainstream, but still continues to keep the originality­ of his thinking at the center of things.

 

These days Mr. Kunkel is engaged in writings scenarios for heavyweight directors like Oskar Röhler and audio-plays for Germany's comedy star Christoph Maria Herbst ("Eine abenteuerliche Geschichte", 2014).

He is an accociated director and scriptwriter of Syrreal Entertainment, Berlins hottest film production company.
